ABSTRACT

June 3, 1953, was the date for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in London. Both Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru of India and Prime Minister Muhammad Ali of Bogra of Pakistan went to London to attend the ceremony. There were occasions for the two to consult informally and Nehru led Bogra to think that he might be prepared to permit the Kashmiris to exercise their right of self-determination. On the occasion Nehru demonstrated a strange feat of political jugglery. While rallies were being staged in the Vale of Kashmir and the Indian army was putting these down, Nehru posed as a surprised man in the Lok Sabha and said there was some quarrel between local leaders and the army was helping the civil authorities in restoring law and order. On August 15, Nehru appealed to the citizens of Delhi to give a warm welcome to Muhammad Ali Bogra.
