ABSTRACT

In the provincial assembly in East Pakistan the two parties, the Krishak Sramik Party (KSP) and the Awami League, of the United Front together held most of the assembly seats. There were some who had no contact with members of the provincial assemblies like Iskandar Mirza and Chaudhury Muhammad Ali. Each provincial assembly would elect a prescribed number of members of the new assembly. Upon his return to Karachi, Chaudhury Muhammad Ali moved forward and changed the whole situation. The KSP leaders felt that it Suhrawardy were to become prime minister their ministry in East Pakistan would not survive and the Awami League would come into power in East Pakistan as well as leading at the center. So they consulted each other and made a quick offer to Chaudhury Muhammad Ali that they would accept him as prime minister if he wished to form a coalition with the KSP.
