ABSTRACT

When Raja Ghanzanfar Ali returned to his home town in May, 1924, he had several months before the opening of the summer session of the Central Legislative Assembly. He visited several villages in the United Provinces and saw for himself the struggle which was raging between shuddhi and tabligh. This conflict was started by Swami Shraddhanand, He played an interesting role in Indian history. The Raja was astonished when he visited the villages of the Malkana Rajputs. Raja Ghazanfar Ali toured the villages for several days with preachers from different organizations and, while touring, chatted with Malkanas about serious and mundane matters. He conveyed these impressions to his co-villagers when he returned home - and suggested that the money go to the Jamiat-ul-Ulema-i-Hind. Lala Munshi Ram, later Swami Shraddhanand, was a leading figure in the Arya Samaj, but, as the author indicates, he was for a time at least an advocate of Hindu-Muslim unity.
