ABSTRACT

The new Legislative Assembly for West Pakistan had been elected. In this sort of election there was no scope for party candidates but it was well known that those who were returned were very largely those who had been elected to their former assemblies on the Muslim League ticket. The Muslim League was almost out of the assembly in East Pakistan and in the center it had lost its position of absolute majority and had to depend on a coalition. Muhammad Ali worked out a compromise under which Khan Sahib would agree not to form a party of his own and the Muslim League would accept him as chief minister as an individual. Muhammad Ali summoned Khan Sahib and Gurmani, and, after meeting them, assured the Muslim Leaguers that Khan Sahib had no intention of forming his own party.
