ABSTRACT

The formation of the National Awami Party was a link in the chain of events which ultimately resulted in the termination of the prime ministership of Suhrawardy. But one can assume that Iskandar Mirza was also looking for a chance to stab Suhrawardy in the back. When Suhrawardy returned from Great Britain and the United States he found drastic changes in the assemblies. At the same time the Krishak Sramik Party (KSP) had been dickering with Mirza. The KSP strength was no less than that which remained of the Awami League. The East Pakistan provincial president of the Awami League, Maulana Bhashani, protested continually against Suhrawardy's policy and finally resigned his office. A coalition ministry of the Muslim League, the KSP and the Republican Party under Chundrigar's leadership was not an unpleasant prospect in the eyes of Iskandar Mirza. It might prove to be a useful means to preserve him in the presidency.
