ABSTRACT

The ministry formed by Malik Firoz Khan Noon in December, 1957, proved to the last and the weakest of the era of parliamentary government. When the ministry was formed the politics of the country were in chaos. It was quite obvious and generally accepted at the time that the crocodiles exerted pressure on the Awami League ministry through the Congress Party. The Awami League knew that it would lose power without the support of the Congress so its leader gave a signal to Noon and the prime minister had no choice but to comply. On September 8, 1958, some 300 square miles of territory was added to Pakistan when the port of Gwadur and some adjacent land was transferred from Omani control. During his short prime ministership, I. I. Chundrigar had taken a bold step in that he had delegated special powers to the army through an ordinance to check smuggling on the East Pakistan-India border.
