ABSTRACT

The year 1958 brought a new political crisis to East Pakistan. Some of the members of the ruling Awami League were angry at the role their party had played in the halting of army operations against the smugglers. In hopes of defeating the ministry, the Krishak Sramik Party (KSP) opposed the bill, while the NAP pressed for certain amendments which fitted its policies. Fazlul Haq was the founder and patron of the KSP. He saw a chance to bring the KSP into power by dropping Ataur Rahman's ministry. Fazlul Haq summoned Sarkar and said that he was governor until his successor took the oath of office so he administered the oath to the new chief minister at 10 o'clock at night. Syed Azizul Haq, a prominent member of the KSP, held that position. The budget should be passed without debate and the remaining part of the agenda completed under the chairmanship of Azizul Haq.
