ABSTRACT

The incessant attempts by the Krishak Sramik Party- or, more specifically, its parliamentary leader, Hamidul Haq Chaudhury - to gain entrance into the Noon cabinet finally met success when Chaudhury was added to the ministry in August, 1958. The Republican ministers held a number of portfolios which, according to the settlement, were to go to the new ministers. The Republican ministers would not surrender their portfolios and the prime minister feared to compel them as it would entail a great risk of a split in his party. Chaudhury had taken the oath of office on August 6, but the negotiations between Noon and Suhrawardy dragged out and the Awami Leaguers were not sworn in until October 2. Suhrawardy, therefore, aided himself and Noon by directing his ministers to resign from the cabinet. At the same time he assured Noon that the Awami League would continue to support the ministry until the elections.
