ABSTRACT

The Declaration of Mexico was adopted by the World Conference of the International Women's Year, the first major international conference devoted to women's concerns. The Declaration of Mexico draws a connection between women's status and the general political and economic international system. The reference was a source of serious controversy; it, rather than the provisions on improving the status of women, directly accounts for the negative votes and abstentions. National non-governmental organizations should contribute to the advancement of women by assisting women to take advantage of their opportunities, by promoting education and information about women's rights, and by co-operating with their respective Governments. The right of women to work, to receive equal pay for work of equal value, to be provided with equal conditions and opportunities for advancement in work, and all other women's rights to full and satisfying economic activity are strongly reaffirmed.
