ABSTRACT

A Committee of the General Conference of the International Labour Organisation in June, 1934, on the basis of a report from the Director-General of the organization, recommended the drafting of a treaty prohibiting work by women in underground mines. The treaty prohibits all females, with the exception of those engaged in some special categories of work, from working in underground mines of all kinds. In 1946 the International Labour Organisation adopted the Final Articles Revision Convention which made some formal alterations in response to the dissolution of the League of Nations. For the purpose of the Convention, the term "mine" includes any undertaking, whether public or private, for the extraction of any substance from under the surface of the earth. The formal ratifications of the Convention shall be communicated to the Director-General of the International Labour Office for registration.
