ABSTRACT

The transition from the political act of the coup d'Etat to what has been referred to as the "redressing" of the political economy of Algeria has implications for the relationship between the classes in and out of power. If, as Antonio Gramsci put it, "structures and superstructures form an 'historical bloc'," the links that hold the bloc together must be sought in the ideological structure of the dominant class. As one of the most abused concepts in the social sciences, ideology has lost the richness of the meaning imparted to it by Hegel and Karl Marx. For Hegel, the problem of ideology or "imperfect consciousness" arose as the result of his conception of history. Hegel viewed history as a universal process with a universal Mind. The Charter of Algiers differs from the Tripoli Program in that it was based on two years of experience in government.
