ABSTRACT

Latin America’s importance has increased dramatically since World War II. In 1929 only 6.4 percent of all exports went to Latin American countries, over half to Brazil and the rest to other neighbors. Uruguay is Argentina’s third most important market in Latin America for manufactured products and globally one of its best customers for all types of goods. Chile is also important economically. It has long been Argentina’s second best customer in Latin America for manufactured products and all goods. At the Third Latin American Mines and Energy Consultation Meeting in Lima in November 1973, Argentina and Chile agreed to study an electrical interconnection between Mendoza and Santiago, and the joint development of both countries’ oil and copper deposits. Political differences in various inter-American and intra-American and intra-Latin American forums did cause relations to cool for a time.
