ABSTRACT

Exploration includes the search for minerals, or indications of their possible existence, as well as the work necessary to determine if an economic ore body exists. In general, most uranium exploration programs are conducted in three phases: preliminary regional reconnaissance to identify potential areas; detailed reconnaissance to confirm and rank the favorable areas; and intensive geophysical and geochemical exploration of selected favorable areas by drilling, sampling. Since the 1940s, the search for uranium has been based on two characteristics: its geochemical activity and its radioactivity. High prices and a continuing tight supply have greatly accelerated uranium exploration activities in the United States. If the increased demand and the price of uranium continues, exploration efforts, both in terms of dollars and feet drilled, should continue to increase. Characteristic geological formations and oxidized ore colors were used as guides to determine the presence of uranium minerals.
