ABSTRACT

Mineral resource production has long been a major source of income in Colorado. Historically, production of uranium and vanadium has only been a small fraction of the total value of Colorado's mineral production. In 1977, the value of the uranium and vanadium produced was only 14 percent of total metallic mineral production and only 5 percent of total State mineral production. Most new Colorado uranium operations will probably be on a small scale if the history of past development is any indicator. Construction and operation of a uranium mine and/or mill can provide many benefits to the area in which it is located. The uranium industry in Colorado, however, has been marked by only moderate growth. Based on past history, the socio-economic impact of the industry has probably been minimal. Furthermore, most uranium projects will require less than 100 workers on a long-term basis.
