ABSTRACT

The outcome of the last two decades of the United Nations’ history is that the organization has become more a weapon of war against certain forms of international immorality than a mechanism of peace between nations. The new members of the world organization were regarding it less as an organization primarily designed to ensure peace and security, and more as an organization which should be primarily concerned with human rights at large. The ultimate purpose of the African states within the UN has been to try to isolate South Africa diplomatically and, if possible, economically. As the United Nations’ efforts in trying to globalize the policy of isolating South Africa have not been as successful as her policy on decolonization, the initiative to put pressure on the big powers has been passing directly to regional groupings and individual states. This has been particularly true in regard to the issue of the sale of arms to South Africa.
