ABSTRACT

Time-consuming operations in a reports centre using a manually produced card catalogue and announcement bulletin are the multiple typing and checking operations. Mechanization, in some form, can be applied to all work functions of an information centre. Multiple typing of reports or serials lists which need periodic updating can also be avoided by using eighty-column punched cards and a tabulator. Bibliographical data for the report input are typed on standard optical character recognition (OCR) forms in the library and scanned by an OCR reader in the computer centre, resulting in a magnetic tape which is processed by the computer. Computer-operated loans systems have been developed in a number of libraries and developments are summarized in a paper by Marvin E. Wilson. 'Computerization' is normally understood to mean a process accomplished on a computer. Many entrepreneurs have developed integrated Computer Output Microform-produced microfilm or microfiche and computer interfaces that cause the computer to drive the reading equipment.
