ABSTRACT
In the more developed countries agricultural regions are mostly seen as areas of specialization in the production of a particular farm enterprise or group of enterprises. Agricultural regions may be seen to increase or decrease in size, to change their degree of concentration of a particular enterprise or even apparently to move across country. Agricultural regions may be defined by a wide variety of criteria such as agricultural enterprise or enterprise association data, or by measurements of land use, farming inputs, crop areas or quantities, livestock numbers or farming types. Subsistence crops dependent on rainfall have regional distribution patterns in which the constraints of moisture supply are less marked. The growth of towns, of industrial occupations and crafts, of service industries and the development of commercial agriculture are all taking place within areas which have hitherto been devoted mainly to subsistence crops.
