ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how the bibliotherapeutic tool contributes to beneficial group interactions. Group dialogue provides the participant with a forum for getting feedback on possible solutions to a problem or for getting advice about workable strategies that someone else has used to deal with a similar issue. Bibliotherapy participants often attest that talking about a work of literature with other members of the group has led them to greater self-understanding. In addition, the facilitator should remind the members that in bibliotherapy the material is a tool for allowing each participant to explore feelings and ideas. The reasons leading to termination are slightly different for clinical and developmental participants. Participants might take some time to use pictures, words, and phrases to make collages that express their thoughts; alternatively, they might write or choose a poem that they can then print on different pieces of colored paper to distribute as cards to others.
