ABSTRACT

The concept of community has been utilized by many social scientists in understanding social life. It has been described on the one hand as a positive force, an intricate network of social mechanisms that binds human groups together. According to this view, community provides a structured setting that gives meaning to people’s lives by providing and reinforcing the dominant values and norms of the group. Some observers note that without these social guidelines anarchy would prevail, and human groups as we now know them would cease to exist.
