ABSTRACT

This chapter gives a brief overview of the history of midwifery, providing a taster and directing the reader to more comprehensive resources. Its aim is to support readers in understanding the historical context of bygone practices and to avoid interpreting them according to current standards. It begins with pre-twentieth-century birth attendance, with a spotlight on key issues such as surgical intervention and failure to progress, as well as education and legislation. Moving through the twentieth century, the chapter looks at maternity policy, issues related to the social context of birth and technological milestones. It ends by considering the current situation of midwifery.
