ABSTRACT

Many people have expressed concern recently that students in colleges of education and university departments of education are not receiving an adequate amount of instruction in the ways and methods of teaching children to read. The difficulties are really forbidding in their complexity. The normal student is usually a person who finds reading both easy and pleasurable. It is unlikely that he has experienced any difficulty in learning to read, and he has probably received every encouragement to utilize fully his skill at all stages of his development. Many students find the organizational aspect perplexing, and although school practice time should be one of experimentation in teaching techniques, it is not in reality always feasible for the insecure student to vary his organization of the class and its work. He will need much encouragement and help from the tutor. The essential thing is to encourage and help the student to think effectively about the problems of teaching.
