ABSTRACT

Researchers have examined the experiences of plurilingual scholars’ efforts to write and publish their research through many lenses. The purpose of this chapter is to synthesize the existing research by focusing on three areas: Policies affecting scientific publishing; pressures on scholars to publish research in English when it is their additional language and they are geographically located in the global (semi) periphery; and the challenges these scholars face in attempting to participate in knowledge production and dissemination of their work in the global, neoliberal era. At times, special attention will be paid to scholars who speak Spanish as their first language (L1), since it is this population who are the subject of the case study detailed in Part II of this book.
