ABSTRACT

To better understand MU scientists’ experiences with English as an international language of scientific communication, a case study methodology was chosen. The case – the scientific writing for publication course outlined in Chapter 4 – was used as a window into MU scientists’ attitudes and experiences, including their perceptions of English as the international language of science, their plurilingual writing for publication practices and challenges, and their perceptions of a scientific writing for publication course designed to address their research writing challenges. This chapter outlines the researcher’s methodological approach adopted to investigate the main research question – What are MU scientists’ experiences with English as an international language of scientific communication? – and three related sub-questions:

What are these scientists’ (and others connected to the course) attitudes towards English as an international language of science (EILS)?

What are emerging and established scientists’ challenges when writing for publication?

What are stakeholder perceptions of the intensive MU scientific writing for publication course?
