ABSTRACT

'Topical islands' represents twelve stages of the meetings process, mapping the stages that meetings need to pass through if they are to be successful. Students use the map, first to analyse the progress of meetings, and then to help them plan and participate effectively in the conduct of a meeting. Meetings are a vital forum for the exchange of information and ideas. Decisions made in meetings have a considerable effect on students' work. A meeting is an opportunity for the student to make an impact, but it can also feel frustrating and intimidating if it is not run properly. 'Topical islands' is designed to help the student to conceptualize what happens in meetings. It also provides a graphic checklist for students to use when they are responsible for chairing meetings, and an illustration of how to help people work effectively together, which is an essential skill for effective chairing of meetings.
