ABSTRACT

Interactive digital media projects must integrate media that currently exists only in an analog form. In this case, the production team must convert the analog files into a digital format. Although converting media to digital formats involves making compromises, there are several advantages to having media in a digital form. One major advantage is that it can be reproduced without generation decay. Ease of distribution is another advantage of digital media, but has led to many copyright violations. The types of files that are most often compressed are stored in the computer as a description of the media it represents. A description-based file is a detailed representation of the discrete elements that comprise the media. Converting analog sound to digital involves taking samples of the original analog source. However, in this case, a high sampling rate means taking more samples in a given amount of time.
