ABSTRACT

Building on the general overview of Tunisian CSO political culture that the survey data produced, this chapter analyses findings from structured, one-to-one interviews. I conducted 66 interviews with leaders of Tunisian civil society organisations (CSOs) between February 2014 and July 2014, after the new constitution had been ratified and before any further major political events occurred. I also interviewed nine non-CSO members to verify these findings. These interviews provided greater depth into the attitudes and values (discourses) of CSO leaders and allowed accounts of the practices of their organisations.

The survey addressed the criteria of civil political culture as separate entities. However, the interview data demonstrated how the criteria interconnect and their development is inter-reliant. For example, the development of Trust is contingent on an organisation’s levels of Transparency and also on its capacity have Tolerance of other civil society actors and their perspectives.
