ABSTRACT

On the tree-bordered country road disappearing into the mist, the water stands in puddles—the rain pours down. Wooden-hubbed, with a covered top, a personal car stands on the road with its black hood raised. The liveried chauffeur tinkers with the motor. The skeins of the pouring rain are defined by the light of the car’s two seemingly over-large brass lamps. The puddles on the road reflect broken light. Through the car’s glass window a strong-faced older gentleman contemplates the chauffeur’s struggles. He is wearing a broad-rimmed priest’s hat and a black robe. According to the testimony of his face, he is keenly aware of his own importance.
