ABSTRACT

Case story 2 uses the historical narrative of how America changed in the 1970s to support the change lesson:

Understand the world your people live in and how their responsibilities influence their hopes and fears.

It highlights how today most organisations operate in a global environment that’s reminiscent of the uncertainty that America felt in the 1970s. This lack of stability makes culture-change programmes harder to implement, which is why it’s essential to empathise with people and the world they inhabit if you’re to win them over to your change vision. Case story 2 tells the story of how racial strife, the fallout from the sixties counterculture and a changing economy helped conservatism find a voice in white suburbia. Its cast of characters includes President Lyndon Johnson, Charles Manson, Joan Didion, Bruce Springsteen and the conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly.
