ABSTRACT

Kallimachos and Chrysorroi is the only work in the whole corpus of the late medieval Greek romance for which an author has been claimed. A poem of 161 lines survives from the hand of a fourteenth century Byzantine author, Manuel Filis, and bears the title Epigram on a Book of Romance by the Emperor’s Cousin. 1 Filis is celebrating a romance written by a contemporary member of the royal family, Andronikos Palaeologos. This involves him in giving a summary of the plot of the romance and he follows this with an allegorical interpretation of the story. He does not give a title or the names of the hero and heroine.
