ABSTRACT

Gender differences in Japanese society, as elsewhere, have been constructed. Although many changes have occurred at various levels, there are still preconceptions and stereotypes. This chapter looks at the concepts of onnarashii and otokorashii and provides a critical look into various aspects of gender in Japanese language and society. The first reading offers a view of the recent legal challenges surrounding gender equality. The second reading reveals the very traditional nature of stereotypes. The third reading offers an insight into gender from the male perspective.
