ABSTRACT
Freud (1925) states that in denial we have an intellectual version of repression, which preserves the essential character of repression, or at least its emotional counterpart. Naturally, we have even stronger defence mechanisms than denial, such as splitting (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) or hyperbole, well described by Bion (1965), in which the affect is violently expelled and lost “in space”.
