The view of New York from Manhattan Island; the view of London from the heights of Hampstead; the view of Paris from the hill of Montmartre; a circle of mountain peaks; a tropical forest hiding the earth’s surface to the boundaries of the horizon. The overthrow of Louis Philippe in Paris was the signal for risings in Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Prussia. M. Cremieux wanted to restrict himself to an annalist’s account of ‘what happened’; the narration of events which a number of keen observers scattered over the city of Paris must have seen during these days. Evidence was secured directly, and through the chief police officers of Paris, from eyewitnesses of the insurrection. The ‘crisis’ in the widest sense of the term began with the refusal of the government to allow the holding of a political banquet in one of the suburbs of Paris.
