ABSTRACT

Tanzania’s socio-economic history and development are some of the significant factors that determine the level of and the importance that highlight as well as give credibility to the case for good governance. Indeed, via the Public Leadership Code of Ethics, a case had long been made within Tanzania’s constitutional framework for clear ethical standards and conduct. In addition to the code of ethics, numerous reform programmes have been put in place to strengthen public accountability and governance. Increasingly, the importance of corporate governance for economic development in Tanzania is recognized by policymakers and regulators alike. The introduction, by the Steering Committee on Corporate Governance in Tanzania, of guidelines for corporate governance for Tanzania and the development and recommendation of principles for effective corporate governance by the Capital Markets and Securities Authority are further indications that corporate governance has received increased attention. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
