ABSTRACT

Climate change does not mean just a few more degrees on the thermometer. It means uncontrollable floods followed by ruthless droughts. High risks of desertification in the Sahel and floods in coastal cities in West Africa are just two out of many other examples of the alarming consequences of climate change. The African continent is more exposed than others to the climate changes at work across the globe. The predicted increase in greenhouse gas emissions calls for putting the emphasis on reducing climate change. Kyoto had launched the Clean Development Mechanism, which seeks to provide technological and financial support to developing countries in order to reduce the impacts of climate change. The author believes that restoring land is one of the priority areas to reclaim sovereignty over our territories, allowing the re-establishment of communities that are otherwise disintegrating due to the impacts of climate change. The Great Green Wall project is exactly the sort of ambitious response to this crisis.
