ABSTRACT

Sensitivity can lead to remarkable insights and expressions, and it can also amplify the pressures and fears of life to overwhelming levels. Many people distinguish emotional sensitivity and objective analysis as separate perspectives that do not cohabitate. Active-minded, active-hearted (AM/AH) individuals are emotionally attuned to themselves and their surroundings, and when they are moved emotionally, they think deeply about their experience. Individuals may be emotionally sensitive and not very analytical, or highly analytical and not very emotionally sensitive. When AM/AH individuals appreciate the benefits of their sensitivity and analysis instead of suppressing them, they can experience powerful flourishing. The concept of unrealized potential can intensify fear of failure and chronic evaluation which leads to natural coping patterns like over-control and avoidance. The combination of an active mind and an active heart allows individuals to connect their deep feelings and thoughts to values that provide meaning and purpose.
