ABSTRACT

Organizations devote significant time to developing their mission, values, and vision statements in the belief that effectively communicating these statements will lead to enhanced planning and performance. Similarly, professionals in human development and leadership espouse the importance of values clarification for motivation, purpose, decision-making, and social change. Most have described the relationship between values and effectiveness as a positive, linear relationship. The relationship between values and effectiveness resembles more of a curvilinear relationship than a linear progression. While values-centered living is crucial for flourishing and resilience. Leaders often attribute the plateau to something they must be doing wrong. Individuals who strive for values-centered living also describe this experience and conclusion.
