ABSTRACT

Many young adults experience high levels of pressure because of their strong desire to engage in a career that has meaning to them, but the competition for those meaningful opportunities is extremely fierce. Every generation has its cultural legacy of hardship, tragedy, uncertainty, beauty, and success. Values and fear play an important role in the decision-making and actions of a culture. In some families, the influence of extended family members is an important part of development. Older generations’ relationship to fear and values affect how they interpret the challenges of younger generations. For instance, older generations that experienced large-scale war and depression grew up in a culture where introspection and reflection were seen as potentially dangerous and threatening. In response to racial bias and systemic trauma, a number of people in marginalized communities formed cultural sets of values and methods of coping.
