ABSTRACT

In an educational environment, atypical behaviors are often glaringly obvious, and the potential for negative consequences to influence the group dynamics are real. Not only will the bereaved child be vulnerable to the negative effects of grief, but the entire class may experience disruptions from the daily routine. The potential issues include intense and unexpected emotional reactions, behavioral and discipline problems, and academic difficulties. This chapter explores the common ways in which students may express grief during the school day. The topic in considered from the perspective of an individual child’s experience as well as that of the class as an entity. Awareness of the possibilities allows teachers to empathize and effectively prepare for the variety of potential reactions.
