ABSTRACT

In this section, atypical reactions will be described. These responses can be behavioral, emotional, cognitive, or social. Brief descriptions of abnormal symptoms and corresponding mental health issues will be discussed. These will be considered within the developmental frameworks of each age group. This unit will cover not only the obvious signs of trouble but also suggest subtle red flags that might arise in a classroom setting. At the same time, individual differences in healthy reactions will be emphasized. Educators and other adults should be sensitive to the needs of grieving students, but it is equally important not to jump to conclusions or assume the worst. Not all negative behaviors are attributable to grief and loss, but the possibility should be considered without making assumptions. The focus of this chapter will be on increasing awareness and knowledge of mental health diagnoses related to grief.
