ABSTRACT

The potential to reverse the effects of learned helplessness and hopelessness via sublimation and catharsis will be explored in this section. Focus will be on healthy ways in which to express the emotions connected to grief. It is not uncommon for kids to repress their feelings. They also avoid triggering sadness in the surrounding adults, so emotions are bottled up. Catharsis and empathy will be considered as positive ways to direct the pain of loss, as well as the benefits of discovering meaning and purpose. Ways to encourage this process in the educational setting are suggested in this chapter.
