ABSTRACT

Although grief is difficult to handle at any time, the holiday seasons present specific challenges. Special days are times of celebration, and good moods and fun times are anticipated. Focus is on spending time with family and friends. Traditions trigger a sense of nostalgia as we remember holidays in our past. All of these factors can increase feelings of sadness and loneliness in a person who has recently lost a loved one. For a child in school, he is bombarded with reminders of the special times as students express excitement and the class prepares for celebrations. This student not only feels alienated, but he may also struggle with a sense of guilt for allowing his negative mood to ruin the experience for others. This chapter highlights issues of grief at the holidays and suggests ways teachers can be aware of potential issues and support kids who are floundering during these special occasions.
