ABSTRACT

This chapter presents leadership in a Confucian cultural context using Confucius’s Analects as a case study. Major leadership themes that arise in the Analects are: the collective expectation that others will follow a code of conduct to achieve social harmony; the importance of a leader’s self-development for the purpose of serving the larger group; the importance of tradition to ensure harmony; the expectation of reciprocity between leaders and followers; and the belief that ethical decisions should be guided by virtue but made in light of the particular situation. The chapter also presents Hofstede’s concepts of collectivism and power distance and applies them to Confucian leadership.
