ABSTRACT
This chapter explores ideas about representation in the field of distributed cognition to outline a computational role for instruments, drawings, and gestures in musical activity. Cognitive artifacts, according to this view, play a computational role in musical thought and engagement. Charts and drawings of musical landscapes for the guitar demonstrate variation in focal awareness based on genre. They demonstrate that movement is the home domain for musical thought in performance.
