ABSTRACT

Chapter 1, Introduction, presents the background of this study, the problems regarding teaching and learning of Islam in confessional and constructivist religious education as well as absence of diversity in the Islamic Religious Education curriculum. It also highlights the challenges faced by Muslim pupils regarding the issues of secularism and radical Islam. In addressing these problems, this chapter proposes a new theoretical and pedagogical approach to Islamic religious education based on the philosophy of Critical Realism and the theories of Critical Religious Education and Variation Theory. Following that, it presents the aims of the study undertaken and the structure of this book.
