ABSTRACT

Organizations spend billions of dollars each year on training and development. In this chapter, you will learn the steps to diagnosing, developing, implementing, and evaluating such programs. This chapter addresses the steps to a learning needs assessment and the purpose of each step; the key factors – within the individual, within the organization, and that are part of the training – that may improve or impede training effectiveness; the major learning principles associated with training in organizations and how these can be used to enhance training effectiveness; some of the key training methods and their effectiveness; the central issues in evaluating a training program, including how to measure training outcomes and appropriate training evaluation designs; the key issues for maximizing training effectiveness for yourself; key legal and global issues surrounding training and development; and the current issues and research around training and development.
