ABSTRACT

Oral expression is the focus of a suite of pedagogical tactics and strategies that are presented in this chapter. All tactics and strategies are accompanied by a short summary of the evidence demonstrating the benefits of the recommended tactics and strategies. For oral expression, most of the tactics and strategies emphasize the modalities underlying verbal and dramatic expression. Tactics and strategies include attention to how teachers voice written texts through daily poetry performance as well as through read-alouds to students. Additional strategies are presented for students’ voicing of written texts in the form of poetic performances, Readers’ Theater and drama practices such as collaborative drama, process drama or oral storytelling and acting. Attention is also given to organizing collaborative talk in the classroom.
