ABSTRACT

This chapter presents research-based tactics and strategies for reading expressions of meaning with particular emphasis on cultivating reading practices and broadening and deepening reading strategies. Within the classroom context, attention is devoted to the provisioning of choice in texts that are available and describing what choice looks like. Related to choice in the cultivation of reading is that choice be accompanied by a focus on the pleasure of the textual engagement. In order to broaden and deepen reading, a framework for mediating learning is presented and illustrated with research-based examples across different representational forms and different modalities. Strategy clusters are presented on symbolic cues (letters, words, images), using one modality to gain insight into what might be expressed in another modality, and the contributions of modes within a text. Text structure and genre cues are considered in relation to strategies such as activating background knowledge, hypothesizing and goal setting. Activating textual mindfulness, reviewing and reconstructing textual experiences and connecting the experience of the text to a larger scope of experience are also explored.
