ABSTRACT

David Barrett begins by talking about how overwhelming the “time jump” episode of Star Trek: Discovery was, and how he began breaking down the script. He explains the careful balance between variation and repetition that he had to strike in the episode, and talks about how point of view factors into that issue. He elaborates upon his planning process, detailing how difficult it was when the script kept changing. He also discusses the challenges and pressures of launching a new show for CBS All Access versus his day job as producing director on Blue Bloods, and talks about balancing intimacy and epic scope and the use of music in his Star Trek episode. He concludes by asserting that everything he does is motivated by character – point of view and the emotion being expressed inform everything from blocking to the color palette.
