ABSTRACT

Kimberly Peirce opens her interview by telling how she broke into television on the series The L Word. She then explains why she came back to TV years later after making the feature films Stop Loss and Carrie, and talks about working on I Love Dick with showrunner Jill Soloway. She goes in depth into the visual style of I Love Dick and how it connects to the female gaze, with particular focus on the intimacy of the sex scene she directed. Peirce explains why the shows she directs are closer to feature films than one might expect, and goes into why and how she extensively prepares for each episode. She talks about how she adapts to a more restrictive way of shooting on something such as John Ridley’s American Crime, and how working on different shows expands her visual literacy as a director. She explains the difference between working with actors on features and on TV, and then moves on to a discussion of the action series Six before concluding with musings on the differences between the film world and the TV world.
