ABSTRACT

Bryan Spicer begins with an explanation of how he plans large scale action sequences such as the season eight finale of Hawaii Five-0, which involved an enormous submarine. He discusses directing action sequences that are integrated with visual effects as well as less effects-dependent set pieces, explaining how he works with the stunt coordinator to plan fights. He explains how and why Hawaii Five-0 uses three cameras, and how the Hawaii locations are utilized. He also discusses how framing can create a sense of claustrophobia, and how he guides other directors on episodes he is producing but not directing. He explains how he schedules guest directors, and then talks about his own experience as a guest director on The Man in the High Castle. That leads into a discussion of Spicer’s early years as a television director working for Steven Spielberg. He finishes with a discussion of the pros and cons of working on one show versus being a journeyman, and says why he likes having settled in on Hawaii Five-0.
